A truly family-run pub

How many pubs are now in the same family after 4 generations and more than 90 years! Jane and Peter have taken on this family heirloom from Jane's mother, Megan Hughes. It is a pub bursting with stories of locals that have been loyal through generations of families. A place where regulars enjoy a drink at the bar, holiday-makers pop into on their way to and from Wales - and anyone can simply enjoy a friendly atmosphere with great food and drink!

Jane, Peter, the manager - Jill, and the team look forward to welcoming you to their very special Shropshire inn, very soon...

Food

The style of food reflects the feel of the pub - its 'real'. Top quality local ingredients are used to prepare the best pub food. The Windmill is all about enjoying a good meal with friends; there is nothing fancy or pretentious - just honest, top quality food - prepared by Chefs, Clive, Eva and their team in the kitchen. There is a tasty twist when it comes to puddings - Jane makes these herself, even the ice cream. You might even want to start with dessert! Jane does not stop here - homemade chutneys, elderflower cordials using produce form the family farm and orchard and every table is completed with a seasonal arrangement from the farm garden.

History

Jane remembers the queues out of the door on a Sunday evening, when she was upstairs in bed as a child. These were the Welsh pub-goers from across the border looking for a Sunday drink; as the last pub before Wales - Sunday evening was a busy night at The Windmill! This is just a touch of the history that resides in the walls of this historic family pub. The pub has been gradually refurbished over the past three years, to make it work for the pub-goer of today - but keeping the loyal locals happy too. Re-framed of pictures of treasured past customers that are now part of the fabric of The Windmill, can be found on the walls - all have a story to tell. Just ask someone at the bar and they will fill you in...

Outside at The Windmill

"Probably the best view in Shropshire" - and no one knows that it is there. Tucked away behind the pub, out of the view of passing traffic, are not one but two gardens - the English and the Welsh. You can mix across garden borders whilst you enjoy your pint! The view out across Shropshire has to be seen to be believed - a real hidden gem. You can then take a stroll to the actual windmill - and for the more energetic, on to the village of Alberbury and back for another pint at the pub...For those looking to relax - just soak up Shropshire; with a pint brewed in the county, meat reared in the county and one of Jane's puddings made at The Windmill - perfect...
